Powering Nepal’s Future Through Youth Leadership and Action

Kathmandu. Every year on August 12, the world comes together to celebrate International Youth Day, not as a mere date on the calendar, but as a global recognition of the dreams, energy, and determination that young people bring to society. This day is more than symbolic — it is a reminder that the future we talk about so often is already here, living in the hearts, minds, and actions of today’s youth.
Youth: The Driving Force of Nepal’s Progress
In Nepal, almost 40% of our population falls under the youth category. This is not just a statistic — it is a powerful economic and social force. Our young people are the backbone of innovation, social change, and entrepreneurship. From rural villages to bustling cities, youth are solving local problems with global thinking, creating opportunities where none existed, and daring to dream beyond traditional boundaries.
Yet, while the potential is massive, it remains underutilized. Many young people still face barriers — unemployment, lack of access to quality education, limited political representation, and insufficient skills training. If we can unlock this potential, Nepal will not only grow economically but also position itself as a regional leader in innovation, tourism, and sustainable development.
Beyond Celebration: A Call to Action
International Youth Day should not be just about speeches and ceremonies. It should be about commitment and change. For Nepal, this means:
1. Investing in Skills and Education – Education must match the demands of the modern economy. Vocational training, digital literacy, and entrepreneurship skills should be integrated into mainstream learning.
2. Creating Meaningful Employment – Government and private sector collaboration is essential to generate high-quality jobs that keep talented youth in Nepal instead of forcing them abroad.
3. Youth in Governance – Policies about the future must include the voices of those who will live in it. Youth representation in decision-making bodies is not optional — it is essential.
4. Supporting Innovation and Startups – Youth-led startups and creative projects should be given financial and institutional backing to scale their impact.
A Message to Every Young Nepali
To my fellow young brothers and sisters: your ideas matter, your voice matters, and your actions matter. You are not just leaders of tomorrow — you are leaders of today. Every small action — whether it is volunteering in your community, starting a small business, or standing up for what is right — contributes to shaping the Nepal we dream of.
Remember, no great change in history happened without the courage of the young. The fight for democracy, the movement for social justice, and the rise of new innovations all began because youth dared to take the first step.
This International Youth Day, let us not just celebrate — let us commit. Commit to learning, to working hard, to supporting one another, and to building a Nepal that stands proud in the global community. Our time is now. Let us rise to the challenge and prove that the dreams of Nepal’s youth are the blueprint for our nation’s success.
