Dead and Forgotten Martyr: A Legacy of Justice and Equality

On this solemn day, we remember Sahid Hem Narayan Yadav, a courageous leader from Siraha district, Nepal. His unwavering dedication to justice and equality continues to inspire, even though his life was tragically cut short.
Early Life and Leadership
Hem Narayan Yadav was a prominent figure within the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) (CPN-UML). Throughout his life, his leadership was defined by a fierce commitment to the welfare of the people, particularly those marginalized by society. His political journey was built on a foundation of justice and equality, qualities that made him a respected leader in his community.
Abduction and Martyrdom
On February 2, 2004, Hem Narayan Yadav’s life was abruptly and violently interrupted. While traveling by motorbike to attend a CPN-UML district meeting near the Gagan River in Siraha, he was abducted. It was later revealed that the abduction had been orchestrated by Nepal Army Lieutenant Colonel Babu Krishna Karki, with the help of local informants. Tragically, Yadav was killed shortly after his abduction, a loss that sent shockwaves through his community and the wider political landscape.
The Fight for Justice
Following Yadav’s murder, investigations pointed to Lieutenant Colonel Karki as the key figure responsible for the abduction and killing. Despite these findings, no legal action was taken against him. The failure to hold Karki accountable deepened the sense of injustice felt by Yadav’s family and supporters. For them, the quest for justice remains unfulfilled, highlighting the systemic issues of impunity and the challenges of seeking accountability in Nepal’s political and military spheres.
A Legacy That Endures
Though Hem Narayan Yadav’s life was tragically cut short, his legacy continues to resonate. His unwavering commitment to the values of justice, equality, and human dignity remains a guiding light for those who continue his struggle. Memorials and annual commemorations in Siraha stand as enduring symbols of his impact, ensuring that his memory lives on.
As we honor Sahid Hem Narayan Yadav today, we reflect on the profound contributions he made to his community and the lasting influence of his work. May his life continue to inspire all of us to fight for a fairer, more just society.
